FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Union Biometrica, CLONTECH Combine Pioneering Technologies; Mass., Calif. Firms Take Search for New Drugs to Next Level Business Editors and Health/Medical Writers Holliston, MA |Jan. 11, 2001 Union Biometrica Inc., inventor of the COPAS Technology Platform, the only automated system for testing drugs in model organisms, today announced it has licensed the rights to use with its platform CLONTECH Laboratories' unique fluorescent proteins, which vividly display gene expression. The combination of CLONTECH's novel fluorescent proteins with Union Biometrica's platform for automated throughput screening of living organisms, such as the nematode and fruit fly, will be critical to the future of in vivo functional genomics and the search for new drugs, said David Deems, chief executive officer of Union Biometrica. "We believe our companies have two of the key components to accelerate drug testing," said Deems. He added that Union Biometrica and CLONTECH will collaborate to develop additional commercial products that are optimized for drug discovery assays. Union Biometrica has invented the COPAS Technology Platform for the automated testing of the nematode, C. elegans, and other model organisms such as the fruit fly, D.melanogaster, whose gene maps have been identified and are now known to be strongly related to those of humans in all major disease areas. CLONTECH's technology, when combined with the COPAS platform, will accelerate the drug testing on small animal models that has been made possible by the Human Genome Project. The fluorescent proteins will allow scientists to clearly see, for example, cancer-related proteins turned on or off in the context of a living multicellular organism. Union Biometrica's automated, computerized technology gives scientists the ability to analyze drug reactions on tens of thousands of living organisms each day, work that previously took large groups of scientists months to achieve by peering through microscopes. About Union Biometrica Inc. Headquartered in Holliston, MA, Union Biometrica Inc. was founded in 1994 as a creator of customized research systems for drug discoveries in the pharmaceutical and biomedical communities.
