FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pioneer of Drug Screening System Partners with Aventis Pharma; Union Biometrica Backed on Automated Tools for Pharmaceutical Research Business Editors and Health/Medical Writers Holliston, MA | Dec. 11, 2000 Union Biometrica Inc., inventor of the only automated system for drug testing in model organisms, announced today a collaboration with pharmaceutical giant Aventis which will provide funding to further Union Biometrica's research and development of its breakthrough technology. The partnership will focus on use of Union Biometrica's recently developed instrumentation and tools for rapid screening of the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. C. elegans was the first complex, multicellular organism for which the DNA sequence of the entire genome was completed. This nematode is a very attractive model for biomedical research and drug R&D because a large percentage of human genes, including many genes associated with human illnesses, also appear in the C. elegans genome. Union Biometrica will co-develop with Aventis biological materials and screening assays. The collaboration also will provide the opportunity for Aventis Pharma scientists to work with the sophisticated technology at Union Biometrica's Holliston facility. In return, Union Biometrica will place one of its COPAS Technology Platform systems in the Aventis Center for Functional Genomics in Martinsried, Germany, for accelerated analysis of gene function in C. elegans. The automated COPAS system, already in use by several other prominent pharmaceutical companies in the United States and Europe, enables scientists to screen thousands of drugs on tens of thousands of live animals in days, rather than the year or two such testing has taken with examinations through microscopes.
