Electrical Engineer

Job Description

Union Biometrica is looking for an electrical engineer to design, develop and implement data acquisition and control circuits used in our life-science instruments. The right candidate will join a small team of high-energy scientists and engineers developing sophisticated, cutting edge, automated instruments used in biomedical research such as drug discovery, toxicology and genetics research.  Working with a senior engineer, your duties will include designing analog and digital circuits, programming embedded firmware controllers and prototyping test circuits.  The engineer hired into this position is intended to grow into the Senior Electrical Engineer for the company when the current Sr. Engineer retires. This is a full-time position based at our headquarters in the Greater Boston area (Holliston, MA).  


Skills & Experience

We are looking for an electrical engineer that brings:

  • Bachelor / Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • 4+ years of work experience designing analog and digital circuits.
  • Knowledge of optical sensors, motion control, microprocessors and circuit board design.
  • Experienced using and creating schematics and wiring diagrams; ORCAD knowledge a plus!
  • Experienced prototyping and testing circuits.
  • Good problem solving skills including hands-on, electrical aptitude with a “can do” attitude.
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Eager to improve and advance our products with new, innovative, electronic designs of your own.
  • A desire to create solutions for life and biological science problems.
  • Prior experience with programming digital hardware, FPGAs & CPLDs, using C++ / C# / VERILOG & MATLab programming languages is a plus.
  • Prior experience with instrumentation electronics is desirable.


We are a small company so everybody “wears multiple hats” and is highly visible.  In this position you will be involved with the electronics of new and existing instruments.  Electronic specification, design, documentation and testing as well as supporting electronics in manufacturing and at customers is all part of this versatile job.

Our instruments uniquely combine electronics, mechanics, lasers, optics, cameras, fluidics and software and get used by scientists working on cutting-edge research.  We are a small team of highly motivated scientists & engineers best known for our specialty flow cytometers for high-speed analysis and sorting of objects (e.g. cell clusters, c. elegans, zebrafish, mosquitoes) which are too large or fragile for traditional flow cytometers.
